Isthmus Zen Community Organization
Guestmaster
The Guestmaster assists the Head Dharma Teacher by being responsible for
greeting newcomers and making them feel welcome. The Guestmaster role is
assigned for periods of one to three months. Within the Isthmus Zen Community
organization, the Guestmaster:
- Greets newcomers, introducing himself or herself, and
attends to their social and physical comfort.
- Briefly instructs guests in removing shoes before entering
the Dharma room, the standing bow at the doorway, and where to sit.
- Offers a Welcome to the Isthmus Zen Community
handout, and free copies of Isthmus Zen Community/ Kwan Um School of Zen publications.
- Leaves the Dharma Room during practice, if necessary,
to greet and briefly orient late-arriving guests.
- Arranges for or provides refreshments, especially on
scheduled Introduction to Zen Meditation class nights.
- Offers refreshments (tea/juice, cookies) following
evening practice.
- Reminds newcomers of the next scheduled Introduction
to Zen Meditation (3rd Wednesday of each month).
- At retreats, registers participants and records retreat
fees.
